In this case study, we explore London’s inspiring career change from the steel industry to a meaningful role in financial services with Strategic Financial Partners (SFP). His story highlights the importance of seeking a career that aligns with personal values, work-life balance, and the desire to make a lasting impact on clients’ lives.

Background

London began his career in the steel industry after earning an accounting degree. He spent three years with a steel company in Birmingham, Alabama, initially as an accountant before moving to a sales position. While he appreciated the company’s culture and enjoyed sales, he realized the steel industry wasn’t aligned with his long-term goals or values. During the

COVID-19 pandemic, London felt compelled to explore a career where he could build relationships and directly impact others’ lives. He was inspired by his father and grandfather, who worked in financial planning, and decided to transition to SFP to pursue this calling.

Discovery of Purpose

London was drawn to financial planning because he saw it as providing genuine value to families. Having grown up with a father in the industry, he saw firsthand how financial planning could positively impact lives. Now, London helps clients make complex financial decisions beyond investments—whether it’s budgeting, buying a house, or planning for retirement. He finds deep satisfaction in being a confidant for clients facing life’s biggest decisions.

London’s career change enabled him to find a calling that went beyond a paycheck. Reflecting on his role, he shared, “It goes beyond just helping people pick individual stocks. It's really being a counselor, a confidant for people, helping them make some of life's most important decisions, whether that be finances or investing or something that would not necessarily fall under that category,” he said. “It's helping them make some of life's biggest decisions.”

Transition to a Purposeful Career

London was able to start working with clients on day one, thanks to the Accelerated Career Track (ACT) program that gave him access to compliance and onboarding materials, including comprehensive support for the Securities Industry Essentials (SIE) test, Series 7, and Series 66 licensing and educational opportunities before officially starting.

When London began working from home due to Covid, he saw an opportunity. “I thought now's the time for a career change. Since I was working remotely, that allowed me to get all of my securities licenses, all my exams taken care of while working with this other company and having a full-time salary,” he said. “The flexibility of being at home allowed me to study during off hours, lunchtime, etc. When I started with SFP, I was fully licensed from day one, ready to hit the ground running.”

Unique Aspects of Strategic Financial Partners

Throughout his transition, the structure at SFP has allowed London to work collaboratively with seasoned advisors, making the shift from the steel industry smoother. He’s experienced success due to the culture of mentoring and support from other advisors—with one-on-one training and resources available to him as a new advisor.

“Whenever you go and sit in front of a client or even a prospective client, I felt a lot more confident going into that conversation as a result of the one-on-one training with some of the seasoned advisors,” he said.

“They gave me the training, and they went with me to the meetings. We also have resources available if we come across some kind of more complex client issue; we've got people who we can go to within the firm who may have a much better understanding of what needs to be done in that specific situation.”

Advice for Those Considering a Career Change

London suggests that prospective candidates evaluate their current work/life balance.

“Do you want to have flexibility over your schedule?” He said. “As a financial advisor, my dad was able to make it to every single one of my sports games. He never missed any kind of family events because of the flexibility of time he had in his schedule. So that's a big aspect of this career. You have the ability to build your own schedule, be your own boss.”

Do you want to have the ability to control that time where you may be able to go on trips or take the day off, spend time with your kids? You have the ability to be flexible with those schedules.”

Now, as London looks to the future, he’s focused on expanding his client base, especially by supporting the families of his current clients. His goal is to become an established advisor in Birmingham, known for helping clients achieve financial peace of mind and building relationships that span generations.
